Course Description

This webinar will cover recent rule changes to Canadian federal and provincial-level sales tax for remote sellers with Canadian customers. Throughout the course, the presenter will highlight the different types of Canadian sales tax administrations including the federal Goods and Services Tax and the Harmonized Sales Tax (GST/HST) system, the provincial sales tax systems in British Columbia, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba, and lastly, the Quebec sales tax regime.

Webinar participants will discover the fundamentals of registration requirements for remote sellers/non-residents under each of these sales tax systems and highlight different rules requiring sales tax registration, collection, reporting, and remittance under each system. This course will differentiate the requirements for those remote sellers who sell and deliver taxable goods/property, services, and taxable intangible property (including software and streaming media) to Canadian businesses or individual customers. Participants will gain a more complete understanding of the different sales tax systems in play across Canada.

This course is aimed primarily at non-Canadian remote sellers or those who work with remote sellers as tax or law professionals.

Learning Objectives:


  • Outline the basic operation of each sales tax system in play across Canada

  • List nexus criteria and sales thresholds applicable to non-residents, and if they are required to register, collect and administer one or more of these sales taxes

  • Define the implications of selling taxable goods, services, or digital products online through marketplaces

  • Summarize the Canada indirect tax and customs & trade considerations for shipping goods to customers in Canada

David is a former partner of the large international firm environment, who has broken from the pack to work with servicing clients of the small to medium-sized accounting and law firms across the country.  David has worked in the practice area for over 25 years and runs his practice from his Calgary office.  David has worked in both public practice (Big 4/7) and government and has been instrumental in devising unique indirect tax solutions and identifying savings opportunities for clients, while also managing their indirect tax compliance risks, including many years of indirect tax controversy and audit support.   

Located in Calgary, David focuses on the real estate and energy sectors and assists clients in managing their compliance with sales, excise, carbon, and fuel taxes.  David has also worked with a diverse set of clients across numerous industries from NPOs and charities through to large multi-national energy companies.  He has the indirect tax knowledge and experience to help solve clients’ important indirect tax problems.  David works closely and proactively with his clients to manage their indirect tax advisory, planning, audit support, and controversy. 

David is a CPA and CMA and has been a Certified Management Accountant (Alberta) since 1999 and a Chartered Professional Account (Canada) since 2015.  He is also a past co-chair of the Sales and Indirect Tax Committee of the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers.  David’s work with this and other committees, he was a liaison between industry and government and engaged in various indirect tax issues, interfacing and working with industry colleagues and government finance and program administration officials.  David has published numerous articles, papers, and presentations on a variety of indirect tax matters.
