Course Description

This training was created to help you meet the Virginia Board of Accountancy's (VBOA) annual 2-hour (100-minute) CPE requirement for 2020. In 2003, the Virginia General Assembly passed a law requiring all CPAs subject to Virginia CPE requirements to take an annual Ethics CPE course. Sponsors and Instructors must be approved annually and listed on the VBOA website.

  • Satisfies the 2020 VBOA Ethics CPE requirement and fulfills some requirements for the following jurisdictions:

    • Maryland: Satisfies 2 hours

    • Washington, D.C.: Satisfies 2 hours

    • West Virginia: Satisfies 2 hours



  • Relevant to Virginia CPAs working in public practice, industry, government, nonprofits, and academia.

  • Although directly targeted to Virginia-specific Ethics for CPAs, this training can be used to satisfy Ethics CPE requirements for IIA certifications, CFEs, and some others. When in doubt, please recheck the specific requirements of your own individual certification.

  • Uses case-based instruction to consider relevant ethical dilemmas.

  • Includes course materials that serve as reference resources.

  • A PDF-version 2020 Virginia-specific Ethics Student Manual will be made available to all registered participants.

Developed using the VBOA's outline as the course framework, attendees will be able to accomplish the following fundamental objectives:

  • Analyze American Institute of CPAs (AICPA) Code of Professional of Conduct and how it relates to enforcement cases.

  • Identify clarifications to the volunteerism guidelines for CPAs in Virginia.

  • Recognize rules and regulations that guide the profession in the state of Virginia.

  • Analyze the difference between professional skepticism and professional judgment.

  • Identify different ethical decision-making models.

  • Apply decision-making models to come to informed decisions during an ethical dilemma.

Kathy is a Certified Internal Auditor, and Virginia CPA.  Throughout her career in banking and local government, she worked in internal audit, budget, and as the Henrico Police Division Controller. Kathy is currently the Assistant Director of the Office of Budget and Management, for Chesterfield County Public Schools.
